Why I think ‘Work from home’ is career suicide

Rob Moore, co-founder of Progressive Property and the Disruptive Entrepreneur here! A lot of people aren’t going to like this, but, in my own views and opinion work from home is career suicide.

People need real talk. All of this “work from home” or “let’s do a 4-day week and get paid for 5” or “let’s work from home and walk the dog during the day and start our side hustle all while my boss and employer pays for it for me because I am special” – no.

Of course lockdowns required us to work from home. But now we’re out of lockdown, the economy isn’t going to recover itself.

I’m going to share with you a lot of the things, that I think in my opinion, you will miss and why it could be career suicide if you work from home

If you are one of those people who work better from home you should be annoyed with a lot of people, in my opinion, ruining it for everyone and gaming the system. You can only game the system for so long. You can only pretend to work for so long. Your employer will find you out.

It’s not just a culture within a workplace, it’s a culture within a nation at the moment. Our own government is messing around, having parties, not properly working us out of this and wasting our money on stupid decisions.

I believe there’s a pandemic of laziness, entitlement, position, authority, and “I deserve my rights”. We need to wake up otherwise this country is going to get even worse and it all starts with work.

Why working from home, in my own views and opinion, is career suicide

Work from home means you don’t work as hard

If we’re in prosperous times and the economy is booming we can take a step back, have some benefits and relax a bit, but when things are going bad you need to work a bit more. Right now, we’re not in prosperous times, it’s the opposite of that: massive inflation, soaring cost of living, we could be in a 10-year depression – it’s all going wrong.

The only way you get out of this is to work more, earn more, hustle more, produce more, create more, solve more and serve more. The world has forgotten that – wake up! We have to work our way out of this if the government isn’t going to save us.

Work ethic is required. I believe your work ethic can’t be seen when you’re working from home. So even if you are working hard, in my opinion, you can’t be seen to be. You’re out of sight, out of mind.

Work from home means you can’t learn

You can’t learn via osmosis i.e. watching, seeing, listening, experiencing and being in it. You can read books and go on courses, but actually being in the office with the buzz and the hierarchy to make decisions to learn from people by sitting next to them or going for lunch with them, in my opinion can’t be done.

Everything you learn through osmosis to develop your career and move up the ladder can’t be done unless you know the ins and outs of what’s going on. I personally believe that you learn the best and the quickest working that way, in the office, through osmosis. In my opinion you don’t get any of that working from home.

Work from home means you work slower

I believe you can’t get the speed when you work from home so you can’t get as much completed. Everything takes time and slows down because people don’t reply to emails or messages quickly enough.

You will be the first to get fired

In my opinion, I believe you’ll be the first to be let go if you work from home. You can’t be seen, you’ve not got the values, the culture, the initiation or the energy. So in my opinion you’ll be the first to be let go if the business needs to reduce staff.

When you work from home you can’t be challenged

You need to be challenged. I believe many people hate working from home, they’re lonely, bored and lost. You want it easy in terms of your emotions but actually it should be challenging because challenges are what will make you grow.

How do you know where to go next?

How do you spot the next career move from home? I believe you won’t. You can’t feel the competition, the energy, the vibe, the buzz, the interactions or the relationships from home. You’re probably distracted working from home. In my opinion you become lazy and the lazier you get, the harder it will be to work your way up to having a good work ethic.

You’ll struggle to get a pay rise

In my opinion your ability to get a pay rise will be compromised. You work from home and don’t really know what’s going on. Not in all instances but in most instances it’s probably going to be difficult to get a pay rise. You need to work hard and add value in order to be rewarded with a pay rise and, in my opinion, this is difficult to see if you’re not visible to your employer.

You need to earn your rights

I believe you have to earn the right to work from home. It’s something you should earn, not just get given. You work to provide value, so don’t expect everything and not give the value. Businesses exist to serve our clients, to give them value and produce for them but no one seems to care about this anymore.

Do I believe work from home can work?

One caveat, if you want to be an entrepreneur, if you want to start a business or scale a business, if you want to actually make your own money and get out of the system then you have to learn to work from home.

I work from home, but I believe that I earned that right because I started my business 16 years ago. If you want to be an entrepreneur you need to be self-managing, self-motivating and you can’t allow yourself to be distracted. You need to learn to be productive from home if you want to be an entrepreneur.

The one caveat is – learn to be really good at working from home and then you can be an entrepreneur and you will have a job for life.

Here’s how you get really good at working from home

  • Answer your emails quickly
  • Answer your Whatsapp messages quickly
  • Make sure you’re always on call
  • Get more done, get your reports in early
  • Offer to take on more work and be productive
  • Stay in touch with the office even when you’re working from home – don’t go AWOL.

Inflation is a killer right now, wages have gone down, it’s a pretty doomy place. If you want to earn the same as you did last year, you probably need a 15% pay rise just to do that and have the same spending power. That’s not good. No employer is going to give you a 15% pay rise because of inflation and the cost of living crisis.
