3 drastic changes to social media and how to prepare for them

There are three big one potentially huge changes to social media that have just happened recently, that I thought it would be worth sharing with you.

1. Instagram Likes

There’s a proposed test on Instagram that’s going to happen in Canada, whereby the number of likes, are likely to be concealed either from you, the provider of social media content and/or the users.

No one knows exactly why yet. It could be to do with how the addiction to likes on social media, the buying of likes that I think a lot of people do. That’s definitely going to be an interesting test. Let’s see how that goes. I’m really seeing social media changing a lot. It’s a bit of a backlash as to how much we use social media, and how addicted we’ve become, and even platform providers people like, Apple who obviously provide the phone are recommending that you don’t maybe spend so much time or at least get addicted to it.

2. LinkedIn Live

The second big change, is, LinkedIn are now going to allow live streams. I’m doing this live on Facebook, while recording for my podcast, The Disruptive Entrepreneur. The reason that the platforms love you to do live, is because you stay native within the platform. The reward for doing that, is, they give you much better reach. They don’t want you pre-recording and posting across all channels, or just doing a YouTube video, and cutting and pasting it everywhere.

LinkedIn is probably the most engaged, certainly, the best reaching platform out of all social media. It underwent a big change when the Cambridge Analytica scandal came out with Facebook. And soon enough you’re going to be able to do lives on LinkedIn, which is huge.

3. Free and Premium content

The third one, which I think is potentially the biggest one, is, the changing of content, and the difference between free and premium.

You’ve probably heard of Patreon. If you haven’t, it’s a very big platform in he UK, where you can basically support artists, creatives, innovators, influencers. Essentially, fans can donate to their creators. It’s like crowdfunding platform. In exchange for that, they’ll give you some levels of service signed, merged events, shout-outs, WhatsApp Groups, et cetera. That’s been a great thing for many creators who’ve got skills, but they haven’t got massive funding.

Then recently Luminary had 100 million investment, where they are a paid-podcast platform now. That’s possibly a dam opener, because there are many, if any paid-for-podcast platforms. It’s a free media. Now, that they’re charging using the Netflix model. Well, I supposed Netflix in a way, were kind of the innovators of this.

Because 20 years ago, you had to pay for all content. Then it all just became free. And of course, the benefit of free, is, you can get good content for free. But it’s like, sifting for gold, you’ve got to go through all sorts of mud. And anyone can chuck anything out there. It’s like the wild west. And that’s how free content has become.

Of course, how do I differentiate myself, if I’m trying to give you good content? How do you differentiate yourself? How do you know what’s well researched content? How do you know, if someone’s sharing content, have actually done the thing, and they’ve got credibility as the free content world is become, just completely all barriers gone? It has become the wild west.

And now, Facebook have put their flag in the ground to say, do you know what? We want to invest in a premium model as well, because we believe in premium. So, they have just set up their Supporter Programme. And their Supporter Programme, is, where you get to follow an influencer, a creator, an innovator, an artist, anyone who you get value from, and you become their supporter. And they’re doing a trial.

I’m very grateful that they actually selected me as what they deemed to be a good influencer on their platform to test this new Supporter Programme. It’s a test. You can’t really do it for many people. So, it’s quite exclusive at the moment. There’s a blue “become a supporter” button on my page on Facebook.

What the Supporter Programme is, it’s you pay a very, very small premium. It will obviously go up a lot, because it’s a test. For the moment, they’re just charging £3.49. Then Facebook asked that the supporters in their programme give premium content, exclusive content. They give discounts on programmes or merged that they may have. I decided that I wanted to go big on this, and create possibly the world’s best Supporter Programme.

The first 256 got a WhatsApp Group. That filled in 11 minutes. I just filled this morning in 11 minutes. The first 100 get a 10-minute one-to-one call with me every 6 months. I’m doing a random meet-ups around the country, where you can come and meet me, or I just invited my existing supporters to come to one of my events. I gave him a free ticket when I was at paid. I’m curating content. So, you ask me what content you would like in my Supporter Programme. And if there’s enough demand, I will give you that content and some other bonuses, exclusive content that you get, that no one else gets, et cetera. There are other things that I’ll be adding in. And that’s all at the moment for 3.49 a month.

If this rolls out, then free content could be a thing of the past. I think that a lot of people had enough of everyone having a voice, who hasn’t got any credibility. Or, you ask someone, there’s a debate work harder, work smart. You can just get completely contradictory advice. How do you know what advice is useful, and applicable, and with someone’s experience?

Getting rid of all the ads means of course, who would be prepared to pay £3.49 a month to not have any ads or £7.99 a month to have no ads on podcast. I think a lot of people. Facebook is a bit of a paradox isn’t it? Because a lot of people love it and use it for free, and then bitch and moan about the ads. But if it wasn’t for the ads, it wouldn’t be free. So, it has become a big paradox. That’s why I think a lot of people have moved off Facebook. But I still think Facebook is great in many ways.

But now, you can choose. You can have the free content, which is probably going to reduce in quality over time. Or, you can have the premium of paying a very small amount, and get the best content. I believe all that will do, is, it will create a bigger divide between the quality of premium and free.

People are not charging £30, £50, £100 a month for premium content. That was the test of 10 or 15 years ago that didn’t really scale. A lot of these premium content providers like Patreon, like Luminary, like Facebook Supporter Programme, they’re like less than 8 quid a month. Then how much time is that going to save you, and how connected you’re going to get to your influencers, your creators, your artists, the people that you know you want to learn from and connect with.

When these first started, they were really for fans to connect with artists, creators, musicians, et cetera, and to support them. That’s why they have called it, the Supporter Programme. Really, first, someone like myself, it’s not really to support me, because I don’t really need supporting. It’s really for me to give you better quality content. Give it to you the earliest. Be able to sort of connect with me, and meet-up at different places, and really get the best quality I supposed.

I think this is going to be huge. I’m going to be doing a lot of exclusive content. I’ll do Ask Me Any Things every week. I’ve already done one of those. Those have been going like 4 days.

I think it’s going to be huge. Even if you just want to follow it to see how it grows and progresses. Of course, as Facebook rolls this out, the price will go up. They will take the big card, that everyone will be doing it. So, it’s something you can get in early.
