The 7 Types of Income: Which Ones Do You Have?

Listen up.

Most people are stuck with just ONE type of income.

And that one type is keeping them skint, stressed and stuck on the hamster wheel.

I went from £50k in debt to a deca-millionaire by 31. I own and manage over 1,350 property rental units. I’ve written 19 best-selling books and built multiple eight-figure businesses. I didn’t do it with one income stream – I built multiple.

Millionaires have 3 to 7 of these income types working for them.

Broke people have one.

So let’s get brutally honest.

Here are the 7 Types of Income.

Read each one. Be honest with yourself. How many do YOU have right now?

1. Earned Income (Work)

Salary, freelance work, commissions.

You trade your time for money.

UK example: A teacher in Manchester earning £35k salary or a freelance graphic designer charging £400 a day.

This is what 90% of people rely on. It’s the most taxed and the most fragile.

2. Profit Income (Business)

Business, side hustles, selling products/services.

You create value and keep the profit.

UK example: Running a plumbing business in Birmingham that turns over £120k a year with £45k profit, or selling handmade candles on Etsy from your spare room.

This is where I started – turning my first property deals into profit.

3. Interest Income (Lending money)

Savings, bonds, peer-to-peer lending.

Your money works for you while you sleep.

UK example: Stashing £50k in a high-interest savings account or lending via a UK platform like Funding Circle and earning 7-9% a year.

Most people ignore this because “it’s not sexy” – until it quietly compounds.

4. Dividend Income

Stocks, dividends, ETFs.

You own pieces of companies that pay you to own them.

UK example: Holding shares in FTSE 100 giants like Unilever or an ETF that pays quarterly dividends straight into your account.

Passive. Scalable. And once it starts, it rarely stops.

5. Rental Income (Property/Asset)

Rental properties, Airbnb, commercial units.

Assets that pay you every single month.

UK example: A buy-to-let flat in Leeds rented out for £900 a month (after costs) or my own portfolio of over 1,350 rental units across the UK that generates serious recurring cashflow.

This is one of the strongest wealth-builders in Britain right now.

6. Capital Gains (Asset Increase)

Stocks, crypto, gold – when you sell for more than you paid.

You buy low, sell high.

UK example: Buying Bitcoin at £8k and selling at £60k, or flipping a property you renovated in Manchester for a £75k profit.

Or my recent gold buys that have already beaten inflation.

7. Royalty Income (Intellectual Property)

Book royalties, streaming, licensing, franchises.

You create something once and get paid forever.

UK example: Earning royalties from a best-selling book on Amazon (I’ve done this 19 times), licensing your course, or franchising your business model.

I get paid every single month from books I wrote years ago.

Self-assessment time.

Count them out loud right now:

How many of these 7 income types are YOU currently earning?

1? 2? Or are you already playing the millionaire game with 3+?

Be honest. No fluff. No excuses.

Most people have just 1.

And that’s exactly why they stay broke, busy and stressed.

Here’s how to build toward 3 (the minimum for real freedom):

  • Keep your Earned Income as your base.
  • Add Profit Income with a side hustle or business this year.
  • Use the extra profit to buy assets that create Rental, Dividend, Interest or Royalty income.

Start small. Start ugly. But start NOW.

You reject that which you are NOT. You attract that which you ARE.

In order to change your money, you need to change your mind.

If you don’t risk anything, you risk everything.
